Multi-Generational Travel

The trips three generations actually talk about, months and decades after they end. Designed around the rhythm of a real family, not a brochure family.

A multi-generational trip is the most particular kind of brief. Children and grandparents do not, as a rule, want the same morning. A great trip respects that and quietly hides the work.

I have learned, after a few hundred of these, that the question is rarely where. It is what does each person need at four in the afternoon, and how do we get back together for dinner. The answer is almost always a property, a villa, a small lodge, a buy-out of a quiet country hotel, and a guide who knows the family by name on day two.

Childcare is built into the design, not added at the end. Adjoining suites become the rule, not the favour. Drivers know which child is afraid of the boat. The youngest gets the room with the bunk bed, and the oldest gets the one closest to the courtyard. None of it appears on any itinerary, but all of it is real.

What it might include

A working list, not a checklist.

Every trip is bespoke, the items below are typical of how this kind of journey takes shape. Yours will differ.

  • Private villa or full-property buy-out, configured by family
  • A dedicated guide for the trip's whole arc, not a fresh face each day
  • Childcare arranged through families I trust, paired by age and language
  • Restaurant tables held for early seatings, with a quieter back room
  • A photographer for one afternoon, never the whole trip
  • The contingency plan I quietly hope you'll never need
