Birthdays, anniversaries, vow renewals, retirements. The trips that mark a year, and earn a place on the wall.
A milestone trip carries a small additional weight. Whatever else it is, it has to feel for the person, and the best way I know to do that is to learn, early, the things they would never ask for themselves.
Some milestones want the long table. Others want the smallest one in the room. I plan for both, and I keep the surprises modest, a florist who knows the wife's mother's favourite stem, a chef who remembers a dish from a trip ten years ago, a note slipped under the door at the right moment.
There is no genre of trip I'd rather get right. The travellers tend to remember the small things, and so do I.
A working list, not a checklist.
Every trip is bespoke, the items below are typical of how this kind of journey takes shape. Yours will differ.
- A surprise (or three) calibrated to the milestone, not the destination
- A private dinner, a chef's table, a beach, a courtyard, a deck
- Floral arrangements arranged with someone I trust, locally
- Hand-written notes at the right moments, in your voice or mine
- A printed memento at the end of the trip, quiet, not branded
