The trip that begins the rest of it. Designed for two, and for the slowness the rest of the year doesn't allow.

Honeymoons reward patience. The brief tends to arrive in the last six weeks of an exhausting year of weddings, and most couples need, more than anything else, to be told do less.

I plan honeymoons in two halves. The first half is for sleeping, swimming, reading. The second half, once the year has actually left the body, is for the trip you imagined. A driving week, a small island, a city you've never had a reason to visit.

And one quiet detail I'll mention here: I keep a list of the things the couple's wedding photographer told me, and I share them, gently, with the right person at the right hotel. The bouquet from the chapel, the song from the first dance, the bottle from the rehearsal dinner.

What it might include

A working list, not a checklist.

Every trip is bespoke, the items below are typical of how this kind of journey takes shape. Yours will differ.

  • A two-stop honeymoon, quiet first, considered second
  • A small surprise on arrival, calibrated to the couple
  • An itinerary you can actually ignore for the first three days
  • A florist or chef tied to the wedding's small details
  • Photographer for one half day, never more
