Bucket-List Journeys

The once-in-a-lifetime trips. Quietly engineered, three years in the planning, often the trip that becomes a child's most-quoted memory.

The brief sometimes arrives in a single sentence. Antarctica, before our daughter leaves home. The Galapagos as our retirement gift to ourselves. Bhutan, for our parents, the year my mother turns eighty.

These trips are long-form planning, booked early, anchored on a single irreplaceable thing (a ship, a camp, a specific permit), and then patiently built outward. The contingencies are heavy. The packing list is light.

There is no template. There is, however, a way of doing it: pick the one moment the trip is for, work backward from there, never let it slip, and never apologise for the trip being expensive in time. It will be.

What it might include

A working list, not a checklist.

Every trip is bespoke, the items below are typical of how this kind of journey takes shape. Yours will differ.

  • Long-lead booking on the irreplaceable component
  • A multi-layered contingency plan, written in plain language
  • Travel insurance that actually covers the trip's specifics
  • Local doctors or evacuation arrangements where relevant
  • A printed book at the end, never a slideshow
