Beyond Lake Como: Discovering Northern Italy’s Hidden Alpine Heart

A journey through Northern Italy where cosmopolitan cities, breathtaking alpine landscapes, world-class wellness, exceptional wines, and unforgettable rail adventures come together in one extraordinary itinerary.

The iconic Bernina Express is far more than a train ride—it’s an unforgettable journey through UNESCO-listed alpine landscapes, where panoramic windows frame some of Europe’s most extraordinary scenery.

There are few places in the world where you can sip espresso overlooking a glamorous lake in the morning, ski beneath snow-capped peaks by afternoon, soak in centuries-old thermal waters before dinner, and board one of the world’s most scenic train journeys the next day.

Most visitors know Milan and Lake Como. Fewer venture farther north into the Italian Alps, where mountain villages, wellness retreats, family-owned wineries and unforgettable rail journeys reveal an entirely different Italy.

This spring I had the opportunity to explore this remarkable region, and it quickly became one of my favourite discoveries.

Milan – More Than a Gateway

While many travelers simply arrive and depart from Milan, it’s worth spending a few days discovering Italy’s sophisticated fashion capital.

Beyond the iconic Duomo and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan offers exceptional dining, elegant boutiques and a vibrant aperitivo culture. It’s a city that balances history with contemporary luxury and makes an ideal starting point before heading into the mountains.

Lake Como – Timeless Elegance

Lake Como never disappoints.

Historic villas emerge from lush gardens, elegant hotels line the shoreline, and ferries glide effortlessly between charming lakeside villages.

Whether enjoying lunch overlooking Bellagio, exploring Varenna’s quiet streets, or simply watching the changing light over the water from a private terrace, Como remains one of Italy’s most romantic destinations.

Yet only a short drive away, the landscape begins to transform dramatically.

Into the Alps

Leaving the lake behind, winding mountain roads lead into the Bergamo Alps, where picturesque villages replace bustling towns and life slows to a wonderfully authentic pace.

Foppolo – A Winter Playground

Foppolo is one of those places that many international visitors have never heard of—and that’s part of its charm.

Popular with Italians, this alpine village offers excellent skiing, breathtaking scenery and a refreshingly relaxed atmosphere without the crowds found at larger resorts.

Wide-open slopes, welcoming mountain restaurants and spectacular views make it ideal for families, couples and anyone seeking an authentic Italian ski experience.

Wellness at QC Terme San Pellegrino

One of the highlights of the journey was visiting the magnificent QC Terme San Pellegrino.

Housed in a beautifully restored Art Nouveau building, this historic spa combines elegant architecture with modern wellness experiences.

Indoor and outdoor thermal pools, panoramic relaxation areas, saunas and hydrotherapy circuits create the perfect way to unwind after days spent exploring the mountains.

It is, quite simply, one of Italy’s most beautiful spa experiences.

Bernina Express – One of the World’s Great Rail Journeys

No visit to this region would be complete without boarding the legendary Bernina Express.

Travelling from Tirano through the Alps into Switzerland, the train climbs dramatically over soaring viaducts, beside turquoise lakes and across spectacular mountain passes.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage route, every window becomes a moving postcard.

Whether travelled as a day excursion or incorporated into a larger itinerary, it’s an experience that stays with you long after the journey ends.

Tirano – Gateway Between Italy and Switzerland

Before boarding the Bernina Express, spend time wandering Tirano.

This charming historic town offers wonderful cafés, beautiful churches and welcoming piazzas while serving as the perfect transition between Italian culture and Swiss alpine scenery.

Livigno – Italy’s Alpine Surprise

Crossing into Livigno feels like discovering another world.

Known for excellent skiing, mountain biking and hiking depending on the season, Livigno also enjoys duty-free status, making it a favourite for luxury shopping.

Its lively pedestrian centre, outstanding restaurants and dramatic alpine setting make it equally appealing during both winter and summer.

Discovering Local Wineries

Northern Italy’s wine regions often live quietly in the shadow of Tuscany and Piedmont, but they deserve equal attention.

Family-run vineyards nestled among alpine valleys produce distinctive wines that perfectly complement local cheeses, handmade pasta and mountain cuisine.

Some of the most memorable moments of the trip weren’t in famous landmarks—but sitting around a table with passionate winemakers sharing stories that have been passed down for generations.

Bergamo – Italy’s Best-Kept Secret

The journey concluded in Bergamo, one of northern Italy’s most underrated cities.

Its beautifully preserved medieval Città Alta is enclosed by Venetian walls, filled with cobbled streets, artisan shops and inviting piazzas.

Often overlooked by visitors rushing to Milan or Lake Como, Bergamo offers authentic Italian charm without the crowds.

Why This Journey Works

What makes this itinerary so special is its variety.

In 10 days you can experience:

  • Cosmopolitan Milan
  • The timeless elegance of Lake Como
  • Authentic alpine skiing
  • World-class wellness
  • UNESCO rail journeys
  • Boutique wineries
  • Historic medieval towns
  • Outstanding regional cuisine

It’s an itinerary that surprises at every turn and reminds us that some of Italy’s greatest treasures lie just beyond the places everyone already knows.

If you’re dreaming of Italy beyond the ordinary whether for skiing, wellness, food and wine, or simply exploring somewhere new I would love to help design an itinerary tailored entirely to you.
